Because if you copy Elon you don't have to give money to Elon at huge profit margin. ITAR/reliance on American whims and their political interests are another huge deal. That's why Germans started RFA and why French at Arianespace are begrudgingly working on Themis, why Rogozin is fumbling with new rocket proposal every other month and why Chinese have like half a dozen of startups themselves.

So among these anime-faggots I will ask some space-related question.

Assuming that Starship's belly flop landing will be tested good enough and realiable, what stops them from making booster land, or decelerate in similar fashion (belly flop). If falling down in belly, creates greater drag, thus limiting terminal velocity and making landing burn take even less fuel.

Sometimes falcon 9 booster had to make 'pre-reentry burn' to slow down enough, to not melt in atmosphere, so if starship booster would decelarate belly first, maybe it wouldn't need to make such a burn?

Ignoring the fact that the booster would probably crumple if it bellyflopped, the booster (and the F9 first stage) aren't coming in at a high enough speed to bother with the belly flop. The belly flop is needed to slow down from orbital speeds, which are way higher than what the booster reaches.

Sweet so Long Lehao said the Long March 9 rocket is still under design review, they already made some changes including increasing the core diameter to 10.6 meters, giving all tanks a common bulkhead, and removing the external boosters (interesting choice). I hope Lehao converges on a TSTO design that would be based. That might be after his time though, they will probably want to get to the Moon on a conventional Saturn V ripoff first.

True, calling it the Fermi Paradox isn't the best. It's just a question of "if the universe is so big then how have we not seen any aliens yet?" We can't calculate how common life is because we don't know the variables to the Drake Equation. All we have right now is the knowledge that we haven't found any aliens and that everything thus far points to us being completely alone. The issue is figuring out why things seem to be that way.

if you have cheap ftl travel and a largely empty galaxy then it makes sense that you would just colonize inhabitable worlds - it's cheaper than building artificial habitats by far. but if you don't have ftl and interstellar travel is extremely expensive in terms of energy then building megastructures for habitation and capturing large fractions of a star's energy output becomes the more economical proposition, and, yes, this is something we could spot with our current capabilities.

Landsat being this reliable has been a very good point for analysis of the data, they have the oldest available catalog to compare with. When building these kinds of satellites the rule was to bank all your resources on a single satellite that had a very high chance of surviving for the longest - it was simply cheaper like this. Nowadays with Planet and others this has changed, but the "reliable monolith" is still the king to have your own long-running program.

titan iii was the most cost-effective launcher the us had in the 70s and 80s. titan iv is where it ran into problems because they designed new HTPB SRBs which had huge cost overruns and only ended up flying a few times.

To compensate, the Centaur's on-board computers ordered a burn that was far longer than planned. At cutoff, the Centaur was only 3.4 seconds from propellant exhaustion. If the same failure had occurred during Voyager 2's launch a few weeks earlier, the Centaur would have run out of propellant before the probe reached the correct trajectory. Jupiter was in a more favorable position vis-a-vis Earth during the launch of Voyager 1 than during the launch of Voyager 2.

this is a pretty good writeup on the saga https://www.thespacereview.com/article/3660/1 . essentially the titan iv wasn't going to be able to meet military requirements if they kept using the 7-segmented PBAN SRBs so they had to come up with some new high-performance ones. it was supposed to be done in a couple of years but ended up taking 8+.

My only complaint with Centaur is the boiloff problem and ULA is working on that. It's got the potential to be a long term reusable orbital stage anywhere with ice to mine. I actually like it better than LH2 solid core NTR for most missions.

The tiles on the shuttle were quite a bit more brittle than the ones on Starship, but they were able to survive reentry. I'm not sure they'll be okay without a gasket interface between the hull and tile surfaces anymore, though.

Well cygnus and the ATV are off the table, they are both expensive as fuck. Apparently the ATV was human rated though (idk how) so it gets extra points if so. Cygnus is beautiful as fuck though. Can't find any price estimates on the japanese H-II but I declare it the winner
Dragon 1 and 2 are very cool but Starship makes them small and gay by comparison and starship isn't in this lineup

It was moronic. The whole idea was that SLS was taking too long, so they could do EM-1 faster if they used commercial launches. But launching an unmanned Orion is not some great scientific or engineering feat, it's literally just a test for SLS and Orion. So instead you have this inbred mission and then you still need to wait on SLS flying a test before EM-2. How to turn one mission into two for no fucking reason.

The only way it makes sense as a publicity stunt before a certain date, but I don't think people are so easily impressed.

NASA has been fucking everything up since the Titan IV and Shuttle got retired. Their vision shrank to match their launch capabilities, and then they proceeded to ignore Venus. Everything was focused on the ISS and Earth imaging satellites and JPL's slow on purpose Mars cadence. Artemis was actually a gigantic kick in the ass to give the rest of NASA a goal and the SLS somewhere to go, but as the SLS keeps slipping it's now turning into the SpaceX show plus a few Orion launches.

As far as robot missions go I'm excited for Psyche, Europa Clipper, VERITAS+/DAVINCI, Venera-D, and that Venus mission that Rocket Lab keeps teasing.

I'm still hoping for starship to make such probes possible. They could start shitting out a probe with a booster stage into orbit on bigger scale. Imagine launching one probe to every planet in solar system in span of one decade.
