I've heard that hydrogen fuel cells are more efficient than hydrogen combustion engines. May someone tell me why that is?

It has to do with the thermodynamic efficiency of the methods of converting chemical potential to mechanical work. In the absolute best case, a combustion engine is limited by the Carnot limit, while the efficiency of a fuel cell is the ratio of the Gibbs function to the enthalpy change of the redox reaction. Also, the fuel cell drives an electric motor which can have fewer moving parts between it and the wheels to remove drivetrain inefficiencies as well. The Carnot limit is higher than the fuel cell limit at higher temperatures, but at those temperatures, exotic materials would be needed to construct the combustion engine

Calling them fuel cells is actually misleading, they are basically batteries.
The real problem is they are made with platinum.

If you want to drive your car with "green" hydrogen then it's actually the same effiency from Solar for example to a spinning wheel on a car. Solar > electrolysis > compression/cryo > transport > fuel cell > inverter > electic motor. Every step looses energy.

Hydrogen is a better method to store energy rather than batteries. Given proper infrastructure, its also faster to refill it vs batteries.
