Many school lecturers now use powerpoints, so notes are technically unnecessary and invalid. A book can be referenced so long as you have it, so notes do nothing there as well. So, why do we take notes?
Well, it comes from before the printing press. People would hand duplicate important documents for purpose of their distribution. Modern experts try to claim it helps reinforce knowledge, but the other much better techniques for memory have been completely ignored. Their comparisons are between relative values of polished shit and as it lies.
So why take notes at all?
Anki is one reason. Flashcards are useful for a variety of reasons.
Humans don't convey information as directly as possible, and notes are very useful for fleshing out underlying structure of a presentation. Notes can also be used to relay information to yourself. Many fiction readers relate fiction to their own life as part of their own appreciation of the art.
You want a note taking trick?
Take the initials of the relevant discoverer of the topic you are studying, take some acronym of the discovered topic, and pronounce them as if it were a word. This is mnemonics 101. The only place this is taught is acting school, and chemistry, for memorizing the periodic table. Next thing is to anchor the short gibberish to some visual cue. Country initials, where applicable, is a pretty good one. Another common example is found in the ouija board. Letters are laid in some manner in front of you. Any combination of letters can be traced out into line art and form a sigil. Even a keyboard can be used for this.
