Because its way way easier to colonise other planets then it is to build one of these things. Just look at how hard fucking in zero g is and then imagine welding together sheets of metal into a cylinder the size of florida.

Efficient doesn't necessarily mean easy though. Doing most things in space end up being way more complex. Simply bracing the two metals together is going to pose a major challenge when considering the scale of the project

Again you do realise that these things are as big as a small country yes? Casting plates and shipping robotic welders into orbit or building them there is quite difficult.

I'm not saying it can't ever be done, but I am saying it is not currently worth the hassle, if its even possible, in current year.

Yeah all of the manufacture of everything but the basic equipment to start up space based industry will definitely have to be done in space, but nothing about these things is technologically unfeasible at all. Additionally, after getting over the hurdle of adjusting to working in space, the lack of gravity makes everything far easier and much more efficient - it'll make planetside industry obsolete overnight. I'm sure that won't translate to people with a monetary interest trying to stop it from happening though, that'd never happen :^)

The best way is to start with a moon base and go on mining on the moon. Launching from the moon is easy becauseof low gravity. Even a space elevator is possible. You don't even need nanotubes, polymers are good enough.
