Suppose we have a 10 story apartment building with two elevators. At night most people are in their apartments, but during the day a most people people leave for school or work. What is the optimal elevator control algorithm to minimize the expected wait time?

Efficiency vs fairness
You could have a very efficient setup where one person waits an hour for the elevator when everyone else is served very quickly.

If we assume that all floors are equally occupied and arrive in random order then you send the first elevator to the top and it descends each floor until filled, then the second elevator rises to the highest floor the first elevator skipped. Then continue until it resets to top floor.

For the reverse, the elevator fills and people get out at their floor.

Wasting electricity to move preemptively.

You get fucked anyways by elevators appearing full but under the weight limit so it stops at floors but nobody gets on.

Elevator problem is like the call center problem but stacked in floors. Plus you have time constraints for how long it takes an elevator to start and stop as it moves. Going down without stopping lets you descend at a faster velocity because you have time to accelerate.

If you had perfect information you would fill elevators in as few stops as possible and minimize time lost on starting/stopping and waiting to load.

I'd say that with 2500 new applications every year it is clear no single optimum solution has been found. Nevertheless you can use the patent system as a repository for inventions for your own use and inspiration.
