I literally failed math over this because I am retarded. If a number is being subtracted and it is supposed to be distributed, is it considered negative or positive? For some reason I could never wrap my head around this because I’m low IQ.

You can distribute it either way. Although you wont be able to remove the paranthesis until you distribute the negative.

Distribution just applies the operation to every term, so 12-10(5x+6) = 12 - 10(5x) - 10(6)

No, the equation would need to be 12 - 10(5x - 6) to expand out like that. I find it can sometimes help to frame it as adding a negative. Think of it like this, the equation is essentially 12 + (-10)(5x + 6). That (-10) is its own number and will be distributed out to the numbers in the parentheses. Expanded, it would look like this:

12 + (-50x) + (-60)

which is just 12 - 50x - 60

np anon, I deleted my post because I made a typo and the other anon did a good job at explaining it.
I think I only really grasped the concept after watching a video on the number line.

Basically subtraction can be said to mean the addition of a negative number. When you frame it this way you will see that it totally makes sense.

i think of it like this: what you're actually doing is more akin to mixing substances like chemicals, and you are witnessing the end result/ end product. (+10) is a "thing", (-8) is a "thing", put them together and the eight + and - 8s cancel eachother out to make 0s and you're left with two +1s making +2.

Good point. My explanation kind of aims at the same goal, in the sense that by switching your perspective to "subtraction can be said to mean the addition of a negative number" you realize that the operation is always addition and that the -10 in this case is separate thing .
