>>13680939To start, we have 24 hours in a day and going
around the world is a total of 360 degrees. Thus,
each 15 degree span of longitude is an hour long,
and is the basis of the time zone.
At one moment in time, the sun appears
differently in the sky from zone to zone and is
considered a different hour. So, we have all hours
of the day and night accounted for.
But...since we're humans the zones aren't so
clear cut. Instead of following the nice straight
line of the longitude, the zones bulge and shrink
just so someone's house isn't temporally
bifurcated.
And some small islands in Kiribati
wanted to see New Year's sooner for tourists
so they are in UTC +14--already more than 12
hours for half the world.
And China wanted to
be all uniform so they get one zone instead of
three--so you can have breakfast and lunch at
one time.
And North Korea didn't want their Pangapsumnida
mixed in with South Korea's Gangnam Style
so they are 30 minutes ahead of them--though
they share the same zone! And perhaps more...
We're prone to be up in the day and sleep
at night, so we need those division of hours.
But UTC is the official way of bringing the
world together in terms of communication,
events, and commerce--no matter what time of
day. So feel free to use it and see how you feel.
TLDR: Time is a mess by our hands, so use UTC.
