They have a lot of specialized training for that, which I'm ready to believe benefits their effectiveness. However, preachers and coaches do most of a psychologist's job every day with minimal training.
To their credit, psychologists have studied the question of whether they are more effective than preachers and coaches with minimal training, and concluded that they generally are not.
