Use a physical sunblock like zinc oxide. Also I’ve tried polypodium recently, haven't noticed any sunburns in the south and there’s a small bit of research suggesting it may provide ~spf 4 protection, which is good enough for a short work or bike ride.

If you're some pathetic pale angloid whose skin hasn't been touched by sunlight in years, limit your time in the open sun for a couple hours a day until you get a proper tan and after about a week or two you're gonna get properly acclimated
