That mouse experiment is interesting, but in a way that kind of makes sense? If the microbiome in your gut is used to receiving a lot of food, it would make sense that its host would be hungry more. But I wonder what the mechanism is for these microorganisms to interact with our body? Doesn't this article indicate it is somehow influencing rats' nervous system by making them feel hungry?

yes this is 100% true. This is also the reason why people born to C sections have a higher rate of autoimmune disease. If you're not born vaginally you don't get the dose of beneficial bacteria from your mother which you need, so your immune system can freak out.

That is unless you were given a strong broad spectrum antibiotics cure. I had one. Bowels were not happy. A lot (most?) bowels bacteria had been killed and I had to take some probiotics with a good starting culture.

How many different strains of bacteria are there in the gut? If you kill them off with antibiotics, how can you replace them all? Probiotics, even if they can make it into the gut, appear to only contain a small number of strains. How do we get our full compliment of strains back?

Fecal transplant is the only viable option we have, that I'm aware of. As you say, supplemental probiotics, whether from a supplement or food, are nowhere near as diverse as what's in our intestines.

Given the regularity of people taking broad spectrum antibiotics, seems like we're risking exhausting microbiome diversity across society. Women can't pass along gut bacteria that they don't have if it's already been killed off by antibiotics and other factors.
