We can get pretty close with polyphasic sleep schedules. I think the most extreme one that can be done stabely was like 2 and a half hours of sleep a day in 20 minute increments.
Considering how practicers of these schedules and the sleep deprived experience longer term cycles entered more quickly it does seem to indicate that this is a state doing something the brain needs to do.
If it was just to conserve energy or hide from predators then we would be able to shrug it off with out going bad shit crazy.
