Physics brainlet here, got a question.

Mass dilates time. That means near an object with high mass such as an black hole the time is running slower compared to here.

If I was able to travel instantly near a black hole right now would the universe there be younger than here? Or is it the same age and the dilation only kicks in when I travel back and results in more time having passed on earth than for me?

I think you're confusing yourself with semantics, OP. Don't think of time dilation as changong time, because time isn't really a thing. Just think of it as a change in your perception of events, as an observer.

Let me reframe the question. From our perspective the universe is roughly 13.8 billion years old. If we pick a black hole that's 5 billion years old and slows time around it by 50% then is the universe only 11.3 billion years old from the perspective of the black hole?

I know what you're getting at but stop being a pedantic faggot. Here's a part of the universe and there's a part of the universe. Here might have different conditions than there despite both being part of the same universe.

"From the perspective of the black hole" is the key here. From the perspective of earth, the sun is 7 minutes younger than it actually is. Time dilation will slow down events so that your orbit of a black hole appears to take longer from an outside observer's perspective than from your perspective, but nothing about events further from the black hole is changing, just the light that is observable from them. The amount of time that's passed since the big bang is always the same.

Nnnope, gravity and acceleration have real, noticeable effects on time, experimentally proven numerous times
Let's say that you have two atomic clocks, and you bring them from point A to point B: one traveling alkng the surface of the Earth, another taken through high orbit
When they are reunited, the second one will be permanently ahead by a few nanoseconds, and this does not depend on the perception of an observer watching one at ground level, the other at an altitude; because you are confirming it when they are both brought to the same gravitational potential again
The twins "paradox" is an example of the same effect for acceleration, though of course that one has not be proven experimentally

Yeah, I'm not saying time dilation is an illusion of perspective. But it doesn't change how other events at a different gravitational potential pass, as per OP question. So you can't say the universe is younger or older from that perspective, just that events (like the movement of an atomic clock) passed at a different pace.
