The article isn't denying that. All it's saying is there is no evidence against the scenario that a virus from such a bat that was being investigated in a lab then escaped. It also says there's no evidence for it either.

Plausible deniability is the key since it would provide a pretext for escalating in some other way. Provoke the enemy into retaliating without proof, play the victim, tell your own people it was the enemy's bioweapon. The missing piece is a pre-existing vaccine or effective treatment which you'd "discover" very quickly after the start of the outbreak. because there isn't. no one has demonstrated that you cannot replicate these sequences that appear to be products of evolution in a lab. plenty if not most gof studies are is of simulated evolution after some minor modifications. all the evidence for the natural origin is indirect. also the bioweapon angle cannot be dismissed as one can deliberately cover their tracks. and even if this was from a chinese lab it does not mean the project was by the ccp.
