The caveman would observe the other caveman have sex with a live female, observing successful sexual behaviour, while mimicking this behaviour with the cavemans simulated copulation device.
This would suggest that in fact polygamy for men is a normal occurrence for status individuals (i.e - monopoly holder of coconuts) based on mating behaviour of our ancestors.
