Are humans naturally a polygamous species? It seems like a win-win scenario for the mating strategies of both genders. A high-ranking man gets to spread his genes to multiple different women, and the women receive the benefits and resources from the high-ranking man

Naturally, no. Monogamous societies outcompeted polygamous societies. Polygamous societies were almost entirely eleminated from the human population by that selective process. So you have to look at why monagamous societies outcompeted polygamous societies. There are several answers to that question. The main one is that children develop better in monagamous families. Another one is that constraining male sexual impulse to the minimum number of partners required for reproduction allows the ideal amount of sexual impulse to be sublimated into creative efforts while also permitting reproduction of society, resulting in outward expansive forces and increased vitality within that society. Another factor is the decadence and misery of castaway males tearing at the social fabric in polygamous societies, while in monagamous societies there is theoretically a mate available for every man. A final factor is that polygamy is icky.

We've went over this before, OP. Monogamous species with mate swapping tendencies. That is the answer we come to every time. It is still the answer. Polygamous humans are lesser evolved and inferior. They produce low IQ children and weak social structures, which are both easily conquered by more evolved humans with higher IQ and stronger social structures. Source, the vast amount of data we have from all of human history including the data on single parent households/orphaned children from today.

I have an anthropological theory of sexuality that in reality cavemen actually observed other cavemen in sexual activity from afar (i.e. - from behind a bush) to practice with elements of the environment that would simulate copulation, such as attaching a pumpkin to some logs and a coconut.

The caveman would observe the other caveman have sex with a live female, observing successful sexual behaviour, while mimicking this behaviour with the cavemans simulated copulation device.

Most societies are primarily monogamous as a basic social and economic limitation but allow for rich and powerful men to have multiple wives or something like wives. It costs a lot of resources to keep women loyal to you and raise children. As far as I know, only Europeans (excluding Eastern Europeans) were/are strictly monogamous in that they allowed no exception or extremely rare exception to this rule, whereas other cultures had the established practice that allowed it (obviously while most of the population was monogamous).

In the Chinese context, there were not concubines they were his wives. Just different ranks of them. The purpose of this was careful breeding and I suppose to ensure lots of children from different women connecting different families together. Chinese recorded all sex. All of the children are legitimate.
