I wouldn`t say less than a decade but SPARC seems very promising. We may see net energy gains in 2025 when it gets operational. A commercial fusion reactor would take another decade to be implemented.

I was very certain that only the Tokamak or Stellerator concepts will work but since NIF`s record I`m also giving lasers a chance. Who will be the first and how will reactors look like?

Alright fellas how do I get into fusion? I've almost finished a mech eng degree and this looks interesting as fuck. Looking at the careers pages of these companies, it seems that most want engineers with 5+ years experience. What relevant roles and industries should I aim to get experience in so that I can apply for fusion jobs in the future (if they still exist)? Do I need to go back to school? I'm not against postgrad but would like to work for awhile at least.

Look up all those companies I posted. All of them are really closing in on advancements. Helion Energy and Zap Energy are the closest. Zap Energy is actually planning for breakeven in 2023. They use a z-pinch machine. Here's their website: https://www.zapenergyinc.com/

In the short term, of course, but even fission was early on more costly than fossiles. Once the infrastructure stands, fusion will beat all other energy sources by magnitudes. Solar only became a viable commercial energy source in the last 10 years, but you can`t install it everywhere, unreliable and space based solar is too inefficent.
