You might want to look into Skinner's Intermittent Reinforcement if you're looking for a Scientific explanation for online attention whoring OP.
There's also Anthropologist Natasha Shull's Ludic Loop which was more based on gamblers, but there is a distinct incentive design connection between social media like the kind Loomer is using and Ludic Loops.
You might also want to read about the 'Dopegenic Pathway' which is related to Ludic Loops but I can't remember the relevant researcher's off the top of my head.
