I have to comment as well: For an OS that prides itself on having commands that do single things and do them well and then to encourage the user to string them together to perform powerful functions, to not employ functional coding in the kernel is a bit shizzo.

Pretty sure the reason you use C in the kernel is because you have to actually work closely with the hardware and you want it to be as efficient as it could possibly be. C is relatively close to how the hardware actually works while functional programming is not.
