It has to do with orbitals and repulsive forces of same poles.
Oxygen has like 2 pairs of electrons in its outer orbital and 2 lone electrons. The hydrogen atoms bond to those 2 lone ones.
It makes it look more like a boomerang because the repulsive force from the pairs is stronger than that of the hydrogen electrons.
