Is there any reason not to eradicate them? They do nothing but kill people, spread disease, and do not contribute much to the ecosystem.

Maybe it's just hard to do, I read once that they were looking into genetically modified mosquitoes who would produce infertile offspring, but idk what came of it

In some parts of northern Canada they've been observed to be able to asphyxiate moose so maybe there's some life in Canada dependent on finding moose carcasses to eat?

There's been some experimenting with GMO mosquitos and IIRC, the trials have been successful but no one has done them at larger scales.

Nah, they contribute plenty. Their nymphs feed dragonfly nymphs, they're pollinators, they increase the internal biodiversity of mammals around them, they help bacteria, viruses, and microscopic parasites explore new genes by inserting them into non-traditional hosts, they can kill large mammals which provides food for scavengers, decomposers, and plants, ect.

We've tried.
We even tried with DDT and maybe killed some locals in the process.
But they just won't die, so we gave up.

Those deaths are part of what keeps species numbers in balance. Take away the cause of death and the weak will dilute the species more and overpopulation will take off.
I hate mosquitoes, passionately. They ruin much of my summer and I nearly died from a bite over a decade ago. Still, without them we would possibly suffer more.
