Wealth is used by people as a proxy for social status in a loose social hierarchy of dominance. Especially by men. A power law distribution of wealth / relative social status that naturally occurs in all human societies (and some other common situations)
This isn't necessarily a problem except that it's wealth and inevitably material goods that are used as the proxy for social status. So many, many people will end up with very few resources, despite their social status not being important to them at all. This massively effects their life satisfaction
If we want to reach a post-scarcity society, we have to develop a new proxy for social status (the desire for a higher social status is a natural human behavior and can't be changed without genetic manipulation), or else most resources from automated asteroid mining (which should give us essentially unlimited resources) will be tightly controlled to elevate a very small number of peoples' social status. My recommendation is for social status to be most closely tied with your life achievements, how many close friends you have, your degree of celebrity, and your overall merit in your community
I see no evidence (in the past 20k years) that humans alone can achieve this. However, constructing a super AGI (after solving the control problem) as a benevolent and all-good guide for humanity, will almost surely be successful for correcting humanities mistakes and controlling society so that everyone can live a decent life
