Why is vitamin D deficiencies so relevant for covid hospitalizations then? Does vit D have an effect on the immune system or just some nuance reaction to covid

As you dig more deeply, you tend to discover that all these little vitamin and mineral micronutrients have hundreds of interrelated functions in the body and that cute little tables of functions are grossly misleading.
Probably ANY vitamin or mineral deficiency would increase COVID hospitalizations. It just so happens that a vitamin D deficiency is awfully common.
Could also be a simple correlation at play that has nothing to do with vitamin D deficiency: maybe rugged outdoor types who get lots of sun are more likely to shrug off medical care when they shouldn't.
