That's what the private sector is for now. The public sector has been inert for some time, and taking on token projects for the sake of appearances. What the fuck has NASA done recently, other than letting their space tech rot away? Shit, they can't even make it back to the moon even if they tried.

I really wonder what the future will be like if JWST fails. They haven't done anything in decades that they can point to and have the public and Congress say "that's worth the money". Even things like the helicopter on Mars gets mostly yawns after the first couple of days.
Obviously Congress critters like the federal money they're able to pour into their districts but there are other more flexible ways of accomplishing that. The beauty of NASA was that the pork spending could be forgiven by the public because NASA was doing inspiring work. Without that, their budget is hard to justify.

Because NASA is either old geezers who thinks that SLS is the solution for everything, and it doesn't matter that it's ten times over the budget, and two decades behind the schedule, because it will take us to the Moon and to Mars, one day, someday, maybe. And then there's the other crowd, who doesn't care when or how we will get to space, as long as the crew will not be made out of the white heterosexual males.
