Once autopilots are so good they can land you anywhere in any weather without any ground infurstructure then personal VTOLs might become viable for the rich. I don't see it being viable for the general population any time soon because aviation is going to remain expensive until we deregulate it and no one is in a hurry to deregulate an industry that can drop hundreds of tons of burning fuel anywhere.

Flying taxis have been a thing for a while, they are called helicopters. The market for flying taxis could expand if they adopt new technologies to make the craft lighter, quieter, cheaper and autonomous, but don't expect a miracle. Safety is also an important issue because like that anon said, regulations make flying expensive. That's why a lot of "flying car" designs use a redundant number of rotors, so that if one were to fail the other could pick up the slack.

probably a nightmare to compliant with regulation from both applications.
In car mode it will need to generate downward lift while in plane mode upward. so if you don't want to rotate your cockpit upside down it makes airfoil deign optimization harder as they need to consider about both AoA directions.
Generally its gonna suck as aircraft cuz all the deadweight incurred by the weight taken up by suspension, frame, tire hurts maneuverability and range. Most aircraft are very specialized and expensive to fuck around as manned airborne is still out of the grasp of most people.
The closest thing is like an aircraft that can also do some road trip, but why would it travel by road by itself?

May happen but full flawless autonomy and absurdly high reliability will be the norm well before.

It’s a pain in the ass for an experienced qualified pilot to fly a Cessna low over a residential area let alone land there. Karen and Jamal never will.

there is a check list of a hundred things that you have to do before you take off in even the smallest cessna. Expecting some soccer mom to do that and maintain an airplane is not realistic. The reason that plane disasters become relatively more frequent as the craft gets smaller is chiefly because of the pilot or the maintenance, not that the smaller craft is inherently more dangerous.
