I graduated from Penn State and my project was an expansion of my thesis paper (Utilization of structural materials with piezoelectric qualities to manipulate reactivity through buckling factor via current injection to components of a reactor vessel hull)

I currently work in the "real world", I think you're just projecting.

I really really enjoy my research personally, never had any issues with funding because it is a useful/important topic. I love my research and I wake up everyday glad that I can fully immerse myself in it, my two co-advisors are fantastic guys that I get along with great who have been nothing but encouraging. My degrees are all CS so at the end of the day I can just get a programmer job instantly if things don't work out for whatever reason.

What are you implying? I've worked at several startups already and bought a house. I'm doing grad school for fun. If you think that this is a tough job market for developers you are completely mistaken I get recruiter spam constantly.
