I would feel really good if I could devote my time to intellectual pursuits but I'm just not smart enough

I have a friend who did a Master's degree in pure math and had the same problem. You just gotta lower your standards a little bit. Maybe you won't get in a top algo trading firm, but if you know how to code in python and put a little effort in a portfolio you can get a $100k salary from a software startup.

for example, the smithsonian institution didn't admit that the wright brothers invented the airplane until the 1930s. for the first 20 years of aviation, the smithsonian institution was pushing the story that former smithsonian institute boss samuel langley was the real inventor.

Math majors aren't high IQ and majoring in Math won't add IQ points.
High IQ naturally gravitate to math more easily than other majors.

Your first mistake was overestimating your natural talent and majoring in math.

Look into actuarial work, it doesnt pay as well as finance but it often pays in the 100k-200k range and the company will often pay to get you certified.
