Mathematics seems to be one field of knowledge in wich this country has an upper hand compared to other Latin American countries. Most Brazilian mathematicians I know of work with dynamical systems or topology. I guess a fair assessment would be that Brazil, since Avila's Fields Medal, is on the upper echelons of third world mathematics research.
