Masks and distancing and pathological handwashing basically eliminated the flu. COVID-19 came from a lab and was designed to be as virulent and airborne as possible. The virus is so small that even N95 masks aren't effective. In a word, masks work against the flu but not covid. Also flu tests weren't administered. Much of the mortality of COVID came from comorbid COVID-19 + flu and the reason why Italy had the 9% death rate in the initial outbreak.
