That's grindr. Very unfortunate naming coincidence. Grinders are body modders, not quite the same as biohackers since they do a lot of aesthetic stuff with no utilitarian purpose.

I feel like this scene was so much bigger 10 years ago. Nowadays you can just pull out a pocket sized device to do anything an implantable can. Although I do still think a magnet implant would be cool.

We can but it is still far from mainstream. I'd like pic related, and feed it with data from a (near or thermal) infrared sensor, perhaps an acoustic sensor. This is pretty non-invasive which is my preference.
The interesting thing to me is that the brain is able to reinterpret these signals into an image.

Things like your image and augmented reality are closer to where we're headed in the near future I feel. I wonder how much that BrainPort costs and how easily it would be to tinker with what video it's receiving. It's such a pain to see cool devices like this that are locked behind medical uses.

I've recently toyed around with the idea of building myself some sort of prototype wearable that just has a shitton of sensors on it. Maybe this is where the biohackers migrated to? Anyone know of any similar projects?

I think repurposing existing senses is easier, safer and more realistic in the near term. I am a bit surprised makers in general and grinders in particular haven't worked on this.

Perhaps you can use it to see what is behind you, or drivers to gain a 360 degree vision, or firefighters and divers "seeing" with this device using imaging sonars where otherwise obstructed by smoke or darkness in water.

The possibilities are there, up for grabs.

many, many years ago I saw a prototype plat had actuators like "fingers" pressing against the back of the users. It was crude, had low resolution, but it also worked. This tech level is definitely something makers could handle, also without putting anything in your mouth.

I'm part of a biohacking facebook group. I don't really biohack though. I used to be a biologist, so sometimes I answer questions for the noobs. The more serious people in the group put together a sub section on plant engineering. I've got some plans of my own if I ever get around to it. For an independent person, it's much easier to work with plants.

This is more the 'molecular cloning' type of biohackers, not grinding. But some of those guys show up and want to talk from time to time.

We have a dozen posters here so far, I think the answer to your question is yes.
That still leaves a lot of work - for you. Exmierience from elsewhere on 4ch is that we need a good FAQ, either on Installgentoo or Neocities, some branded images, and willingness to update these. Are you ready for this? It is a fair bit of work.
Check out /myco/ and /scg/ as examples on /sci/ plus >>>/g/aig where this works.
