Lets have a thread discussing success in these institutions. How did you adjust to the differences between school and college/university? What behaviors did you need to change to succeed? If you could do it over again from the beginning, what would you do first? What would you do differently?

i took a gap year which morphed into two and am now doing community college cheap. job got extended so my gap year got extended too.

The biggest difference is that in university you are bombarded with a lot of opportunities. Sometimes you might think that those opportunities are beneath you but a year later you regret not having taken it.
The other difference is that the prestige of your uni matters a LOT. Being from a top ranked high school is good too but it is also possible to take advantage of being from a bad or public school.

The mediocrity of my peers never ceases to amaze me. Even in the honors track (~top 10%), people get presented with simple plug-it-in equations for queues in a supply chain class and can't wrap their heads around what they're looking at. It fucks with me that so many of these kids are going to get drooler-tier jobs in accounting, finance, and HR, and then make as much or more than most graduates from the college of arts & science.

I would socialize more. Wasn't interested in practically any parties when I started and was mostly focusing on studying. The studying bit is actually not very necessary since you learn pretty much everything on the job as long as you're smart and can adapt but making connections with your peers which are vital for career progression is much harder when you're out of uni and in smaller social circles. You're much more likely to get a job straight after uni through a recommendation than any course credit or degree.

I missed an opportunity because I lacked study in that particular area. Try to figure out what you want to do career wise ahead of time and study and work on it outside of your coursework. That way when you get the opportunity you can take advantage of it. You really want to be ahead of your coursework in your speciality.

I would say I would network more, not socialize more, slight difference. If you spend your time going to parties, you are going to fail out. You aren't likely going to get a job from meeting someone at a house party. You really need to be in an organization that does something (e.g. puts on homecoming activities or some kind of student research) or be in a frat with a bunch of rich kids whose dads own companies. Don't spend every weekend drinking and watching college football--climb the ladder.

repeat until turns out they know someone who knows someone that then gets you a job. And yeah it doesn't need to be a party, activities and shit work as well because guess who goes to those parties. Obviously don't drink so much you fail out or that you get a reputation as some lazy ass drunk. Drinking isn't even required if you're just naturally fun to be around.

Imagine willingly subjecting yourself to years of cultural marxist indoctrination just to end up wageslaving as a hunchback in a cubicle 12 hours a day and still earn less than a tradechad. Once I got my first F (Differential and integral calculus 1) I realized I wasn't as smart as I thought I was. Realized I was now surrounded by all the other "smartest kids in their class back in highschool", so now the actual competition is under way.
Surrounded myself with learning buddies who were similarly study oriented and learned to both manage my time more efficiently and to sit on my ass and concentrate for very long periods of time.

Don’t fall for the “graduate on time” meme. White collar intellectual work can be done till your mind goes, so an extra 6 months or even a few years means nothing in the face of a 40+ year career. Take your time, a good GPA >>> “on-time” graduation. Do the absolute bare minimum course load you can afford and actually ENJOY being in college. Have fun, party, socialize, do personal projects, explore your intellectual curiosity, and maybe even cop a scholarship or two because you aren’t scraping by because you took 18 credits with two “weed out” courses in a single semester.
