An example: Pretend you owe me two dollars and you have 0 dollars to your name. Now you actually have negative 2 dollars to your name in reality.

And if let's say, some psychopath loves to collect other people's debt and pay it off for them, so he collects your debt and says that he will pay it off for you. He collects 1 of your debts. So you lose 1 dept.

And therefore you have gained negative one dept of negative 2 dollars.

So negative 1 times negative 2 is positive two dollars. Which is equivalent to how much money you gained when your two dollars of debt was paid off by this guy.

The answer to your question is in my shitty post and if you read it you'll understand if you take the time to understand what I'm saying.

It looks like "you owe me an apple but you have none."
How many apples do you own?
It's just the opposite of possessing one.

Technically you don't own zero because you still owe me one, and that's what the negative means in this case, because even when you get one, you'll need to give it to me. So if you get two you'll only get to keep one. Therefore you have "negative one" currently.

Multiplication scales magnitude and does a rotation.

-1 has a magnitude of 1 and a rotation of 180 degrees from from forward. So scale it by 1 and apply another 180 degree rotation you get +1.

+1 has a rotation of 0 and magnitude of 1, multiplying it by -1 just results in a 180 degree rotation and turning the +1 into a -1.

+/- i do the same thing, with +i corresponding to a magnitude of 1 at 90 degrees and -i being 1 and 270 degrees.

A negative number is just the additive inverse of a positive number (i.e. a natural number). A negative of a negative is positive, since the additive inverse of a negative number is a positive number.

Modular arithmetic gets the point across rather well. In mod 3, $-1\equiv2$ , i.e. -1 and 2 are congruent modulo 3. We note that $2^2=4\equiv1$ , and thus in mod 3 $(-1)^2=1$
A better proof follows for integers when distributivity holds. We see that -1 can be written as 0 - 1, so $(-1)(-1)=(-1)(0-1)=0(-1)-1(-1)=0+1=1$

the number shows this nicely. zero is in the middle of the number line and negative numbers are left of zero while positive numbers are to the right.
let's now multiply -4 by -3. visualize -1, -2, -3 and -4 as block that we can slide left or right. you have no trouble with -4 times 3 being -12. this is represented on the number line by sliding the block of numbers to the left. the same thing happens when multiplying by -3 but we go in the opposite or negative direction. our block of 4 negative numbers moves right (-) 3 times and now occupies 12 positive numbers.

Multiplying by -1 = rotating by 180 degrees counter-clockwise. e.g:
(-5)*(-2) = (-1*5)*(-1*2)=5*2*(-1)*(-1)
See? You do two -180 degree rotations and you end up back where you started.
