>>13610854>I just wanted to be a scientist without all these politics and bureaucraciesIf you want a career in science at a university you need to become an academic. If you want to become an academic your existence will become politics and bureaucracies.
>>13610717Also no this is not required just don't be a retard and put even 8 hours of consistent and focused work in every day and you're already way ahead of the curve. I'm doing a PhD in a top 5 global uni and it is littered with actual lazy idiots. Probably this being an area that's very heavily applied has something to do with it.
The professorship shit will be based on how connected you are, how much you've got your name out there and how much money/fame you can bring in. As an undergrad, you just want to be on papers. As a PhD student, you want to be first author on good papers. As a postdoc, you start to look for last authorships on good papers. As an early career researcher, you want to get funding and more last authorships. Eventually someone old dies and hopefully you're shiny enough to get their chair.
Nobody will give a shit about whether you played with legos or huffed toluene in your parents' basement as a kid. You people here have a very twisted image of how the world operates, it's like asking /r9k/ about relationships.
