France survived because they surrendered early in ww2 avoiding losing millions of lives again (like in ww1), and Germany survived because millions of Germans from what is now Poland, Kaliningrad and Czech Republic, and from German agricultural in the Balkans, Baltic and Eastern Europe, were deported to Germany, which helped them compensate the millions of Germans from Germany proper they lost.
If not they would have suffered the demographic collapse of Russia.
France received over a million people escaping from Algeria, the Pied Noirs, and Germany allowed Turks in. So, it was not enough.
Modern total war, war as it was invented by Napoleon, in which a country mobilizes all its forces and all fighting age men have to fight, is very dysgenic, and has nothing in common with the war of antiquity, which was mostly a battle of elites to become the new elites, without bothering much the local peasant.
Being elite used to be a very dangerous job. Hungarians have inherited the Hungarian language from their conquerors but not their genes, because the Hungarian elites died massively in wars against Mongols and Turks. Being elite is good if you suceed and terrible if you fail. The Anglosaxon Elite of England was pretty much genocided by the Normans.
