Yes because in general business is a rational field and if you have the type of personality that wants to "help the world" then business is the way to do it. In honest business all you do is offer to the world your skills, to their maximum extension.
For instance if you are good at making shoes you can make and offer shoes to the world, and that would make the world better. But why offer a couple of pair a day when you can hire and teach and manage 1000 laborers and then offer the world 2000 pairs of shoes while also giving sustenance to 1000 families. Any business that is not crime works like that.

Engineering doesn’t make its money off new ideas at the singular entrepreneur level. You make your money off being a legally defined profession and charging $2k a pop to size out grease traps or backflow preventers or whatever else the county is requiring engineer sign off for.

It’s absolutely not. Most engineering is cookbook style, stepping through a design manual sprinkled with a bit of experiential knowledge so even though I bill you 20 billing hours to do a $2k job it doesn’t actually take me that long, it takes a couple hours at best because I’ve done it a dozen times before and I have all my tools pre-made. Unless you think $1000/hour of actual work is bad pay or underemployment then I don’t know what to tell you. You don’t get paid for the work, you get paid to absorb liability and give surety to the design.

a lot of skills are needed to run an engineering firm, and you rarely have a single person be the best person for everything. i like doing the engineering stuff and letting the others concentrate on the business stuff. even the business savvy engineers eventually find themselves working more on business than sweet projects over time, even if they prefer the latter.

It’s cookie cutter and repetitive on purpose so that people with “big new ideas” aren’t poisoning the water supply or creating fire hazard death traps. Your obligation as an engineer isn’t to mother innovation, it’s to public safety and welfare.

I take satisfaction in working with small business owners and providing them a service that they’d otherwise get gouged for by going with some big box design build firm. I work with owners and other entrepreneurs instead of faceless drones for some gigacorp who don’t give a shit.

No. Engineering school brainwashed me to do exactly what I was told and punished me for innovating. Majority of engineers work corporate and become a cog in the machine. That's not to say one can't graduate then self-learn innovation to become both though.

M8, don’t try to church it up. Running a one man engineering firm is more or less a glorified version of getting a van and starting your own plumbing company. The hardest part is drumming up those first clients and getting the ball rolling.
