if really seems like the whole edifice will fall down before there's a decided, strong reform of the entire University concept
maybe it isn't even possible or desirable at this point
University does not properly:
1- provide a coherent education path for most alumni
2- represent a good value proposition in terms of $$/skills
3- produce valuable research, interface with industry
it sort of does each of these poorly
1 for some people, some disciplines - certification is still important in many disciplines, perhaps unavoidable
2 brand and connections may represent good value still
3 some vestigial parts remain
I'm pessimistic at this point. Perhaps the nature of knowledge and material being so easily accessible also means academia cannot survive in its current 19th/20th century model.
