Because fuck online classes. They're usually run by clueless grad students and TAs, not professors. I was doing a C programming elective online for my main degree a few years ago, and the instructor running it was referring to buffer overflows as memory leaks. Some other dude questioned it politely in the video chat but didn't press the issue, probably not wanting to be That Guy, so the instructor became none the wiser, repeating the error a few more times in later classes.
