I want to know the basics of sociology to understand society. The world cannot be just a mass of independent 100 IQ people acting rationally.
What are the branches and theories of sociology? Easy laymen books, methodology. QRD me.

Milgram's "Obedience to Authority" which introduced the public to a scientific result which didn't even have a field at the time of publication, it was something like experimental sociology, it still doesn't have a name. This experiment was so successful and illuminating, it was banned. It probably should have instead been made compulsory.

Im browsing one of these intro bird-eye books and im appalled by the low quality of the research. At least a good 3/4er of famous sociologists are just airing grievances from their personal life. You get blacks like web du bois talking racism, women talking feminism, black women bitching at white women for being collaborators in patriarchy. Perhaps Foucault, Marx and Durkheim will have something better to say. Weber apparently openly rejected the pretension of science and promoted a sociology based on narratives and improving the world.
