I know what you mean,I never had friends with the same or similar interests for such things. I was the "nerd" and kind of I still am. Now in hindsight, I think it would have been so freaking awesome if I had somebody to explain me the things I wanted to know, but I had to wait until university to get the resources and the discipline to learn by myself.
Back then it was only books. No youtube lessons, no social media to reach somebody who can help, no internet at all. One day when I was about to finish highschool, a friend of a friend lended me a calculus book, and I knew I had to learn that, it was almost obsesive lol.
