Likely, this guy has no longer any interest in science and doesn't apply himself in any meaningful way, he is simply a paid actor that the production teams wheels out and prods with a stick to perform. Gradually, he finds he needs more and more drugs just to function at a subpar level, and recently it has gotten so bad the production team has resorted to using deep fakes to fill in for him.
