At it's core, chemistry is about the creation of materials, and humans will always need different materials and we don't have enough. So being able to go into your amazon-bought lab and making literally any material you want is pretty useful.

You can look up the synthesis of nitrogen triiodide pretty easily so I don't think I'll get v& for saying this, but if you take solid iodine and mix it in concentrated ammonia and let it sit for like fifteen minutes or so, then wash it out with water, it becomes a contact explosive when dried. It makes a pretty iodine gas cloud. Make sure you don't inhale the ammonia gas. The iodine gas is much more forgiving, but don't try breathing it in.

There use to be a website called the hive that was a hub for chemists who shared their insight and synthesis for various illegal substances that has since been shut down. The main founder, Spike I believe is what they called him, had a private chemical supplier company in texas and would provide detailed information on how various substances were made. Not worth trying to make, especially in the us.

chemistry in school was tedious & frankly struck me as retarded.
The labs could be kind of fun sometimes, but the tedious note taking & equation balancing on a reaction we knew the outcome of struck me as busy work.
There's a difference between experimenting & recreating the outcome of a known reaction or process.

Same thing in physics, labs were about showing we did the formulas right, not attempting to "discover" anything. It's nice as verification that what we're taught works, but it isn't very stimulating.

If you can't verify known quantities then how are you supposed to verify unknown quantities?
It's not exciting, and most science isn't. It's a lot of math and tedious note keeping in chemistry.
The thing is, once you've created a new compound or discovered some relationship or process, that is worth all the time and effort.
