As a customer I expect the company to have fronted the startup costs of their production and while I'll indirectly pay for it with $2 of the shoes price going towards factory maintenance and future expansion they know if they asked me for $20m and 5 years before they would be willing to start selling me shoes it's not going to happen. That is the fundamental difference.
