Lang has also written pretty high level graduate textbooks on algebra and is an accomplished number theorist if I recall correctly. That’s the type of person you want writing your beginner math textbooks. His depth as a mathematician allows him to present ideas more simply and intuitively. But more importantly, you will practically have to do 0 unlearning once you encounter more advanced topics on your journey. Not the case with shittier textbooks. Rarely do they understand where the math is going nor where it came from, and as a result you’re not able to carry much forward with you and that makes learning exponentially harder.
