Interesting, same thing happens with Calculus. People were using calculus techniques to solve practical problems centuries before Calculus was "invented".

math is a human activity
when you reach the biggest levels of brain size (Big Wrinkly Brain = BWC) you realize that most morons in STEM gatekeep to a hardcore level, saying shit like "good sir this is a kernel, it's an integral, it's a very sophisticated algorithm you need to use these symbols, do these careful steps, and..." and then you see geniuses that just don't give a shit, who eschew rigor, who solve a problem and then come up with an algorithm, who look at an integral and see the solution and just know the answer without giving a fuck about brainlet crutches and abstract training wheels like rigor, syntax and formalisms.
