Would the mods/jannies consider making a Covid general or a sticky and not allow threads about Covid/Covid vaccines/etc.? I'm very tired of seeing the exact same schizophrenic debates in 1/5th of the threads in the catalog and I know I can't be the only one.

No its not bizarre, people can report what ever they want especially when they're sensationalized by global pandemics and the slew of misinformation that comes with it. The data is completely useless and unmanaged when you take it from the raw reports. VAERS even tells you this on the website itself. They haven't been looked at for any statistical significance what so ever.

But please, take this VAERS report which I made this morning seriously. I got the vaccine a week ago and I got heartburn today. What I didn't include in the report is that I had spicy tacos for lunch but I'm sure the vaccine caused this.

VAERS was made in the 90's in an age where vaccine skepticism was very low. VAERS was not made for a society that is heavily biased against vaccines. Nowadays any heavily biased anti-vax will associate a closed one's death or symptoms with the vaccine and report it. I would say that antivaxxers are more aware of the VAERS than the average american.

I can pull an example that explains the unreliability of VAERS when the antivax sentimentality creates a lot of data noise: The MMR vaccine.

The MMR vaccine is applied to children at a age where they can be diagnosed with autism. This relation caused the antivax parent's of the 2000's to report to the VAERS that the vaccine was giving autism symptoms to their children.

Subsequent studies debunked the causation between the vaccine and autism, and it gives an insight of how unreliable VAERS becomes on these situations.

It is easy to argue that the 2000's MERS and the Covid vaccine are exceptional cases from the status quo of the VAERS reports. Again it is hard to value the validity of the data at all if the far majority of the reports on the covid-19 vaccine is unreliable.
