We can perform scientific experiments which let us know:
- RNA can form enzymes (ribozymes)
- RNA can catalyze protein bonding
- duplications and translocations of DNA can produce a new functional protein
- cell walls only need a handful of lipids to be stable enough for cell division
Based on these things, we know a cell can form abiotically
We have also observed lichen, a symbiosis between algae and fungi.
We have observed the beginning of endosymbiosis, when one protist phagocytosed a photosynthesizing bacteria in a petri dish. The descendants of this protist were able to survive off the photosynthesis of the bacteria.
We've also observed selective pressures which can cause multicellular life to form. Put some algae in a dish, add protists. Protists eat single cell algae. Algae which form a multicellular group survive, adding a selective pressure for multicellularity.
We can examine c.elegans in great detail. It is a miroscopic worm made of a few thousand cells.
It's not difficult to understand how, once multicellular is formed, we could get to complex life like humans.
