Yeah, physics is sometimes okay with sin x = x, but you'd never get marked down for solving a problem without using the small-angle approximation.

He wasn't going for that, this same professor was confused at the concept of a polynomial having more than one root. In any case, it would be a "you don't need to bother doing that much", not a "don't do this".

I have no doubt that MEs could do my job as a programmer, as much as I have no doubt I could do an ME's job. Engineering 'schools' are simply a matter of hiring/society. If you're a true engineer, you can adapt to a new school of thought and do said job efficiently.
