Earlobes, ethnicity, height, skin color, ideology, favorite car etc. Nothing is irrelevant or inherently evil, though modern science is very scared to conduct studies along these divides and it probably isn't socially useful to bring up divisive information, even if it is relevant.
Ultimately it is a weakness to self censor, but the path has been chosen many years ago and the West is set on it.
