As I understand it, particles and antiparticles are constantly being created and annihilating each other throughout the universe. Near black holes, this means there's a chance a particle/antiparticle falls into the hole and its partner escapes. Because information is conserved and this escapee carries information, the black hole loses information and shrinks. Over trillions of years, this means all the information leaves the black hole and it evaporates.
