What do you call a function that has multiple mappings for the same value of x as opposed to a single mapping for each value of x? I'm new to function terminology.

i asked the same thing a few weeks ago. i believe if a single value of x results in multiple outputs, it is not a function, it is called a relation.

In order for a function to be surjective, every element of the codomain must be mapped to. Also, in order for any single element of the domain to have multiple images in the codomain, the function cannot be injective.

There are a few names I've seen for it:
>a multi-valued function
>a multifunction
>a total relation
Other people have said
>set-valued function
which is not quite it because having two outputs $y_1,y_2$ is not the same as having the set $\{y_1,y_2\}$ as output, and
>relation
which is missing the information that every $x$ has at least one $y$ (i.e. that it is 'total')
