In this thread we discuss any tinnitus related questions and/or experiences.

I figured this might pick up some steam for those that got the EEEEEE due to COVID.

(Suicide due to tinnitus from COVID).

Personally, I got mine about a year ago from shooting without hearing protection. Some days are better than others, Mirtazapine has helped me get trough it so far.

A single episode while drinking... an extremely dumb decision and one I regret every day. About 40 rounds of .300 and I lost 40db initially. Was prescribed prednisone after and now I lost about 10db in the lower ranges and 20db in the higher ranges

I've had a rumbling noise in one ear a few times, usually minor and gone in a day, but once it was loud and lasted a few weeks. Went to two doctors and neither could tell me wtf was happening. That was probably close to 10 years ago now and it's never come back even close to that bad. I think it was from grinding my teeth in my sleep, I think it caused some nerve to get pinched in my jaw or something

Be thankful it went away because mine hasn't yet, though I think it has dissipated some. That reminds me I need to schedule an appointment with the dentist to get a mouth guard which I've heard can help, especially if you grind your teeth in your sleep.

Ebselen likely goes on market in 2023-2024, Susan Shore’s Device DeNovo will likely get to market in 2023, and the hearing regens (FX, Oto, Hough) are expected 2024-2028 assuming they pass their trials and are on time. XEN-496 is also likely to come out 2022-2023, and it’s shown very good success in trials for tinnitus, so I think it is the best near-term medicine for tinnitus.

Thanks for that info, you think that for a debilitating mental condition that such a growing number of people are facing that something would be in the market but hearing that "no cure" statement from the GP makes you feel hopeless sometimes.

I have tinnitus from fight and its been years. Its louder than my fan but over time I stopped giving a shit. Also I'm losing hearing on my tinnitus ear. Such is life

stuff like gunshots and explosions are too fast for the tensor tympani muscle to contract to protect you in time. if you're just going to loud work or entertainment environments, the ear contracts gradually over time and you're solid as long as you're not a fucking retard like me and do it hundreds of times.

you get used to the EEEEE. problem is when you get other shit - have had two instances of other phenomena that GPs go "son, there's nothing that can be done" that turned out to be eustachian tube dysfunction and went away. for them it's like "i got it, you have 'noise in the ear,' lol"

I've had tinnitus since I was young but it was practically silent, unless I was in complete silence and payed attention, I'd find that I could hear very light static.
Since about a month ago that it got considerably louder out of nowhere, though I mostly only realize it's there at night when I go sleep and wake up.
It's weird because I don't recall doing anything out of the ordinary (I don't go blasting music as loud or as often as I used to in high school for example). I'm thinking either I got symptomless covid and it fucked up my ears a bit, or maybe it's just my bad anxiety because I swear that it's not always this loud at times.
Additionally, I've also noticed that lately my earls will sometimes feel plugged up for several minutes out of nowhere, like I have dense moist air stuck inside the canals.

Kinda hoping it goes away to how it used to be because sometimes it really amps up my anxiety, which already is sorta high all the time.

Depends on the type of tinnitus you have but it can help in case it's one that mostly caused due to muscle tension in the neck and so on.

My tinnitus isn't that loud, I can still hear ambient noises and hear quiet noises. I usually forget that I have tinnitus, like it's not distracting. I got tinnitus when I was young. I remember specifically the moment it happened. My dad put ear drop medicine in my ear and I heard cracking and then ringing. It just never stopped since then. Also my right ear usually has ear wax when I use cotton swabs, the left one has like no ear wax ever. I wonder if a lack of earwax means anything.

I've got tinnitus about a year and a half ago and now it's mostly tolerable. However, this makes me really fearful of getting COVID vaccination (along with my tinnitus I'm prone to sinusitis, diziness and other shenanigans, which seems indicative of a slightly weakened immune system) and I'm feeling more and more persecuted for my decision on not being vacinated due to this (not to mention that this really limits my life in so far I need to be a fucking hermit). What do /sci/? Would you risk it?

I've had tinnitus for 10 years.
I got it from a Siemens MRI scanner.
I sat outside the chamber because I was comforting someone who was having trouble breathing.
The specialist physician attending the machine did not give me any ear protection.

When the magnet switching started the sound outside the scan chamber was piercing. I felt as if it was going right through my brain.
I focused on comforting the person getting the scan. (Btw the patient does not get the sonic blast from the relay switching inside the mri machine, that is by design)

Three days later I woke up with a high pitched noise in my ears. It has never left me.

In the first 2 years it became so loud that sometimes it was the same level as general conversation.
I wanted to die. I once bashed my head on my car steering wheel in traffic because I could not take it anymore.

My advice: TRT therapy (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy)
It teaches you to live with it.

I don't think it will ever go away, its much softer now after ten years.
