this is something i wonder about. i'm doing a physics phd in in soft matter and i've met a lot of mechanical engineers specialising in continuum mechanics. On the theoretical end i've seen people who use differential geometry and functional analysis to tackle nonlinear mechanics problems, as well as people who write ridiculous FEA simulations from scratch in Fortran and then add on some computational statistics to make things even more predictive. A few come from applied mathematics, but most of them are pure mechanical engineers.

How exactly do Mech Eng PhD candidates learn this without anything resembling the background of these topics? Do you guys have to do extra courses from other departments when you start graduate work? Of all the scientists I've worked with - and believe me, I've met the full gamut as a soft matter physicist - mechanical and chemical engineers seem to be the most versatile.

Yes, we need to pass through several extra courses to properly learn from the basics to the applied and the praxis of a certain subject (i am, for instance, working right now combining neural nets to predict strain behavior in polymeric composites). A pain in the ass? yes, but the returns are simply worth it. Nevertheless, most of us have also passed several physics and advanced math courses in undergrad that help in taking the most complex grad classes.

Also, you got it, ChemEs and MechEs are quite similar in the fact that the vast majority are versatile STEM carreers, since applications are not narrowed or biased towards a single main sector (such Civs certainly are). I believe that is the reason and might come to answer your questions.

BTW, what is your background?

ah fair enough, i guess with a diverse background you can do pretty much anything if you're smart enough. I can imagine that learning continuum mechanics to any practical standard probably demands a high level of mathematical competence anyhow. i've been flicking through an engineering textbook (Non-Linear Elastic Deformations by Ogden) recently and there's a very nice range of mathematical techniques used in solid mechanics alone. We don't typically learn much solid mechanics in physics, which really doesn't make sense in retrospect

I did physics and mathematics at undergrad but I quickly specialised in thermodynamics and statistical physics. My research is also based on polymers: I study non-equilibrium thermodynamics of copolymer self-assembly.

Your research subject reads quite interesting. I think polymers science is a fertile field for research, so godspeed and try to publish as much as you can.

About continuum mechanics, the book by Ogden is now pretty much heavy, but very informative. If you would like to deep more into the topic, I also recommend «Nonlinear Solid Mechanics: A Continuum Approach for Engineering» by Holzapfel. It is one of the best sources around.

EE here. i've had to read CE applications for scholarships and grants as an old job. they are truly retarded, they write at a 9th grade level. I would gladly hang out with mengs. they probably won't take acid on a wednesday with you, but they are definitely more fun and well rounded.
